ST. GEORGE, Utah – An airport in southern Utah, serving more than 200,000 commercial pbadengers a year, will close for four months to allow crews to demolish and rebuild a track weakened by blue clay unstable.
The director of the St. George Regional Airport, Rich Stehmeier, told The Spectrum that the closure is scheduled from May 29 to September 26.
Stehmeier calls the $ 25.8 million reconstruction project "Big Fix".
It will be funded primarily by the Federal Aviation Administration and federal infrastructure funds.
The plans include digging 17 feet under the runway for more than 1.6 km and installing more stable equipment.
St. George is approximately 193 kilometers from Las Vegas and 443 kilometers from Salt Lake City.
The airport handles Delta, United and American flights to Phoenix, Denver, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City.
