Michael Yaw Foli worked as a pilot for 40 years
A retired Ghanaian pilot, Michael Yaw Foli, said it was safer to travel by plane than by road.
The experienced pilot said that despite the recent series of plane crashes, air travel is still the "safest mode of transportation".
According to Myjoyonline.com, he reportedly stated that "the percentage of accidents is very small compared to a traffic accident".
His comments follow two plane crashes that occurred in the last five months, which killed all pbadengers on board.
Last Sunday, an Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed on the Nairobi road, killing everyone on board.
The company issued an official statement confirming that the flight had crashed with 149 pbadengers and eight crew members on board.
According to the company, the plane took off from Bole Addis Ababa at 8:38 am local time (5:38 GMT) and lost contact around 8:44 am.
Although no Ghanaian was among the victims, it was confirmed that more than 30 other nationalities were on board the new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft that crashed.
However, Mr. Foli, who has worked as a pilot for 40 years, said that while air travelers have reason to worry, the possibility of an aviation accident is rare compared to road travel.
He said that unlike drivers, not everyone can become a pilot. According to him, one must have talent for discipline and science.
The former Ghana Airways pilot stated that there was a selection based on merit in recruiting pilots.
He explained that this generally makes air travel safer through its safety and maintenance protocols, which include fuel checks and locating an alternative route in case of emergency, among others.
