The University of Education Winneba (UEW) was closed following protests by students demanding the reinstatement of some sacked lecturers.

Earlier this morning, the police fired warning shots and tear gas to disperse students who were protesting and destroying school property and demolishing billboards on campus.

The police in Winneba initially fired eight blows at the Faculty of Education, near the university canteen, as protesters moved to have their colleagues join their campaign # BringBackOurLecturers who has gained ground since Tuesday.

A dozen students have suffered more or less serious injuries and are currently treated at the university clinic.

Seating to the media about the school's closure, Central Region Minister Kwamena Duncan announced the Regional Security Council's (REGSEC) decision to close the school.

According to him, the closure aims to prevent further destruction of property and save lives.

"At the Regional Security Council, our goal is to ensure the peace and security of the university. So, on the advice of REGSEC, we can not continue to allow the university to sit … every day that pbades, the level of insecurity increases or increases.
