For the first time, Coca-Cola revealed having used three million tons of plastic packaging in a year.
This is part of a report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation that is pushing businesses and governments to do more to combat plastic pollution.
In total, 150 companies pledged to reduce their plastic consumption as part of the campaign.
But some companies, such as Pepsi, L 'Oréal and H & M, have not specified their plastic consumption.
It's hard to visualize what three million tonnes look like. But anyone can imagine a blue whale.
Now imagine 15,000 of them. That's about three million tonnes.
In 2018, the company announced its commitment to recycle a used bottle or can for every bottle sold by the company by 2030.
Coca-Cola markets 500 brands of pop, juice and water, and says it will also be working on all of its recyclable packaging around the world.
Many companies are committed to being greener after their concerns about plastic waste have been highlighted in shows such as Blue Planet 2 of the BBC, commented by Sir David Attenborough.
In this report, 31 companies – including Mars, Nestle and Danone – reveal the amount of plastic packaging that they create each year.
- Nestlé: 1.7 million tonnes.
- Colgate: 287,008 tonnes in 2018.
- Unilever: 610,000 tons.
- Burberry: 200 tons of plastic a year.
Companies are trying to be more open about how much plastic they use – and how much waste they create.
In February 2019, Nestlé has cleared plastic straws from its products and uses paper straws.
Burberry was criticized in 2018, when he claimed to have destroyed unsold clothing, accessories and perfumes valued at £ 28.6 million to protect his brand.
It's now stopped practice.
