Collapse of a school in Lagos: rescue operation underway

A building housing a primary school collapsed in the Nigerian city of Lagos. Students were trapped in the rubble.

The school was on the top floor of Ita Faji's three-story building on the island of Lagos, in Nigeria's commercial capital.

Images of the scene showed rescuers rummaging through piles of broken concrete and twisted metal.

There was no word on the victims and the cause of the collapse was not clear.

Local media reported that the building that had collapsed was a residential block containing several apartments.

Emergency teams fired wounded from the rubble. Some worried parents arrived at the scene while others went to a local hospital to search for their children.

Ibrahim Farinloye, a spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, said the collapse had occurred around 10:00 am local time (09:00 GMT).

"We think that many people, including children, are currently stuck in the building," he said.

It is not uncommon for buildings to collapse in Nigeria. The materials are often of inferior quality and the application of regulations is lax.
