Arsenal fans could have a good time now, as they look set to reach the last eight games of the Europa League – but that was not the case at the very beginning against Rennes, as the smoke spread the Emirates.
The Gunners had a difficult task before the match, facing a 3-1 deficit following a surprising defeat in France last week.
Goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ainsley Maitland-Niles tied the game up before half-time.
However, the start of the game did not go without frustration, the Rennes fans letting out flares in the far away part of the Emirates, while fans of their club reacted on social networks.
The smoke swept over the Emirates for most of the first period and Petr Cech's goal in front of the outside fans was wrapped in white smoke.
Social media fans wondered how the Rennes fans managed to get so many flames into the stadium. One of them said that they were struggling to find water and another who had said, "I am struggling to get a double".
Arsenal recently escaped punishment after its supporters launched flares in France last week, but Rennes was not so lucky as they were hit three times after the first leg.
Fires, invasions on the ground and blocking stairs were among the charges. Rennes will see these cases handled by the UEFA's Control, Ethics and Discipline Body on March 28th.
In the meantime, it remains to be seen whether Rennes will suffer any repercussions following the last incident.
