TAccording to experts, the number of mothers who die after cesarean delivery in Africa is up to 50 times higher than in developed countries.

According to an observational study published Thursday in the Lancet Global Health Journal, in 5 African countries studied, 5.43 out of every 1,000 women died as a result of a caesarean section, compared with just 0.1 deaths in the UK.

And nearly 20% of women had complications during surgery, a figure nearly three times higher than that of mothers in the United States.

The findings underscore an urgent need to improve the safety of cesarean operations, according to the report's authors.

"Improving the surgical results of caesarean section could dramatically improve maternal and neonatal mortality, which would bring significant gains to global health," said Bruce Biccard, professor at the University of Cape Town and author Main of the study.

"Our findings could potentially inform interventions to improve the safety of caesarean sections for the mother and baby."
