Having started playing tennis at the age of 11, Hutchins was educated at Millfield School in southwestern England, and played local tennis for Gloucestershire. The injury ended his nine-season career at the age of 25 in 1970, with his best singles performance in the Grand Slam championship in 1968, when he reached the third round at the same time at the Open of Australia and at the US Open. The right-hander was involved in the Davis Cup teams from 1968-1969 and represented Great Britain in two draws (record 1-2). He also accompanied his compatriot Gerald Battrick to the quarter-finals of the 1968 Roland Garros doubles (left of Hewitt / McMillan).
After retiring, Hutchins joined a sports marketing agency. He was quickly appointed first director of the National Men's Team of the Lawn Tennis Association at the age of 29, in early 1975. Hutchins, well spoken, kind and diplomat oversaw the overall select strategy, discipline the players and choose the captains of the different British teams for 13 years. Hutchins left his job at LTA in 1987 to create his own marketing and sponsorship company, Tennis Concepts, and became director of Riverside Indoor Tennis Clubs (1987-1997). He has also been a television commentator on the BBC (1987-2007) at Wimbledon and other tournaments.
As a talented administrator, he has continued to work closely with the LTA to roll out national programs, leagues and performance initiatives over the past 30 years. With the All England Club at Wimbledon, where he was a director, Hutchins contributed to the development of the UK's largest junior tournament, The Road to Wimbledon, involving more than 7,000 junior players each year, as tournament director at United Kingdom and Asia. In May 2016, he also became international tennis director of the Aspria European Club network.
