Nii Allotey Brew-Hammond – National President of PPP
The Progressive People's Party (PPP) expressed disappointment at the leadership of the two main political parties – the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – in their inability to come together and find lasting solutions to political violence. it undermined the country's democracy.
The party said it was shocked to see that since the two parties convened to unite to solve the problem of political vigilance, the leaders of both parties had only exchanged result.
"In the recent open letter exchange between Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President and NDC President Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, on a proposed meeting between their two parties to resolve crimes of organized political violence, the PPP I have seen with disappointment the strong stance of the NDC and the NPP vis-à-vis our fragile democracy, "said a statement issued by the PPP.
The statement was signed by the party's national president, Nii Allotey Brew-Hammond.
Context
In a recent State of the Nation address, President Akufo-Addo called on leaders of the NPP and NDC to agree appropriate measures to end the unacceptable and worrying trend of partisan surveillance in the country.
The call followed acts of violence that took place during the by-election at Ayawaso West Wuogon.
After the appeal, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo, in a letter, stated that the NDC was "aware that the Commission [of Enquiry tasked to probe the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence] It is clear that elements of the vigilante groups apparently sponsored by your party have already been integrated into the national security system. "
In response to the letter from the NDC, President Akufo-Addo said in a letter dated March 4, 2019 that the opposition party's statement was false.
"First, contrary to what you say, no commission has been established in the current short Commission on the New Patriotic Party's sponsorship of vigilante groups in the national security system. No sponsorship of this type has taken place and there will not be any.
In any event, it is certainly prejudicial to the work of the committee that citizens begin to draw conclusions on the documents submitted to the committee, before the committee formulates its own conclusions and recommendations on this subject, "he said. President Akufo-Addo.
Lost years
However, according to the PPP statement, Ghanaians were still shocked that after 26 years of rule of the NPP and NDC, the two parties have done nothing to improve the welfare of citizens.
"We want to make it known that, in the case of the PPP and the silent majority of Ghanaians, the 26 years of NDC and NPP rule in our politics have proven to be years lost and votes lost to give them the mandate to to govern Ghana.
We sincerely believe with all our heart that the Ghanaians, patient and suffering for a long time, would rise again and show the duopoly: "Do not sit down, make us cheat every day," the statement added.
