Kofi Kapito, CEO of the Consumer Protection Agency
The director general of the Consumer Protection Agency, Kofi Kapito, called on the government to pbad the bill on consumer rights to protect consumers in the country.
The call comes as Ghana joins the world in celebrating World Consumer Day, a day dedicated to promoting consumer rights and advocacy activities, today. Friday, March 15, 2019.
"After 33 years since the United Nations General Assembly adopted a set of consumer protection guidelines and the Secretary-General has been authorized to persuade member countries to adopt these guidelines through changes in policies and laws, Ghana has still not pbaded the bill on consumer rights / competition has been in Parliament since 2007; from cabinet and the Ministry of Commerce without any seal of executive power to present it to the cabinet for further processing that will make it a law, "said Kapito in a statement.
He stressed that consumer rights should be of utmost importance to the government, which holds the collective trust of its citizens.
Kapito urged regulators and all stakeholders to protect the interests of consumers.
According to him, the emergence of online retail outlets, mainly specialized in electrical and smart products, has little or no consumer protection policy against counterfeit brands. "Most of these online stores also defraud consumers. Orders are never delivered, but paid by customers. The Ghanaian consumer is exploited without recourse to an appropriate compensation and compensation plan. "
He added that there was no guarantee on 90% of intelligent products in the Ghanaian market, while in other cases, the popular discrimination label "products sold only can not be returned "is boldly displayed on receipts across the country.
"We take this opportunity to call on Ghanaians to stand up and join the movement that is seeking to force the relevant authorities to adopt the consumer rights bill without further delay," he said.
This day also commemorates a historic declaration of four fundamental consumer rights by former US President John F. Kennedy:
• the right to security
• the right to be informed
• the right to choose
• the right to be heard
