Hurray! It is officially 30 years since the World Wide Web was created, just one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Here are 3 things you probably can not consider a lot:
Number 1: The World Wide Web is not the same as the Internet.
It is so common to use the words "Internet" and "Web" interchangeably. They are actually referring to different things.
The Internet is the global network of computers capable of communicating with each other and goes back to the US ARPANET system developed in the 1960s.
The Web, on the other hand, is the primary means used by the public to access this network. It was proposed by Berners-Lee in the late 80s. It's one of the ways in which information can be shared over the Internet. Internet, not the Web, is also used for email, which is based on SMTP, Usenet newsgroups, instant messaging and FTP.
It is clear, therefore, that the Internet is a vast network of connected computers around the world. The Web is a collection of (Web) pages found on this network of computers. So, because you are on your desktop or mobile device, you use the Internet to access the Web. These two terms are not synonymous and must not be confused.
Number 2: The Internet existed before the World Wide Web
As explained clearly above, the Internet (network of computers around the world) already existed before the creation of the World Wide Web. But until the introduction of the World Wide Web, no one had thought of a way to connect any Internet to all the documents and data that relate to it. Then, on March 11, 1989, Sir Tim Berners-Lee proposed the World Wide Web.
Number 3: There are more than 1.6 billion websites on the World Wide Web.
Of the 1.6 billion websites, less than 200 million are active. The threshold of one billion websites was reached for the first time in September 2014, as confirmed by NetCraft in its October 2014 web server survey and estimated for the first time and announced by Internet Live stats.
