An armed man stormed two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing more than 40 people in an attack. Authorities said the criminal authorities said hatred had inspired hatred of Muslims.
The Washington Post reports that more than 20 people were seriously injured after the gunman, heavily armed and dressed in military-style clothing, opened fire during the Friday or Jumah prayer services.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern reportedly described the incident as "a carefully planned terrorist attack" and as "one of the darkest days" in New Zealand.
The shooting of Friday, March 15, 2019 saw four people arrested in custody. A man in his twenties, whose name has not been revealed, is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday, March 16th.
The suspects apparently did not appear on watch lists.

According to the Washington Post report, the police deactivated an improvised explosive device and worked to disarm it for a second. These devices had been attached to a vehicle used by the suspects.
Anti-terrorism forces have been activated in New Zealand and Australia, with New Zealand raising the level of its threat to national security to "high" for the first time in the country's history.
Portions of the fatal attack at the mosque were streamed live on social media by a man who, according to the police, had also issued a manifesto against Muslims and immigrants.

According to 2013 census data, New Zealand has a very small Muslim population. In a country of nearly 5 million inhabitants, about 46,000 people are Muslim.

Islam in New Zealand is practiced by most refugees and immigrants in the country.
Prime Minister Ardern described the victims as people who "are us".
