Computer hacking and theft remain one of the major concerns of cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Several exchanges and portfolios have been compromised in recent years. According to a report from Japan Today, an 18-year-old man, whose identity was not revealed by the police, was prosecuted on Thursday for hacking.

The pirate allegedly stole a cryptocurrency worth 15 million yen. His report also indicated that the boy had admitted the charges, stating that he "felt [he had] found something that no one knew and did as if [he] were playing a video game. "

The report said that it was the first case where a hacker was involved in criminal prosecution for cryptocurrency loss. He also said that the platform compromised by hacking was Monappy, a digital badet platform allowing users to store Monacoin. The platform was attacked between August 14, 2018 and September 1, 2019, and more than 7,700 users suffered losses. At the time of going to press, the official website of Monappy said that they had closed their services "due to external attacks".

Police said the 18-year-old man was using the Tor browser because it allows users to browse websites without being tracked. However, the police surprised the hacker by "badyzing the communication records left on the website's server". The report added that the latter was exploiting one of the features of the website allowing users to transfer cryptocurrency. He stated,

"[…] knowing that the system would work badly if the transfers were repeated over a short period. He repeatedly submitted currency transfer requests to himself, overwhelming the system and allowing him to save more money on his account. "

After hacking the platform successfully, the hacker would have transferred the cryptocurrency to another platform. The hacker then bought items such as smartphones with stolen currency, the police said.
