The pilot of the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed asked for permission "in a panicked voice" to return to the airport shortly after the takeoff, reports the New York Times.

Friday's report quotes "a person who examined the air traffic communications" after Sunday's flight, claiming that the controllers noticed that the plane was coming up and down hundreds of feet, and that its speed seemed exceptionally fast.

A spokesman for the airline said the pilot had received permission to return. But the plane crashed a few minutes later in Addis Ababa, killing 157 people on board.

French authorities now have flight data and voice recorders of the aircraft for badysis.

In Ethiopia, officials began taking DNA samples from family members of the victims to help identify human remains.

Countries like the United States put the Boeing 737 Max on the ground 8.
