Neil deGrbade Tyson has become a figure of pop culture through his live entertainment on television and his scientific commentary on movies and television shows. Tyson has been off the radio for months, because of allegations of badual misconduct against him. An investigation into the allegations took place and Tyson now returns to Fox as the host of Cosmos.
Cosmos was originally scheduled for its second season on March 3, but was delayed indefinitely in early February. His show Nat Geo Startalk was also removed from the air in November due to the allegations and the investigation. For his part, Neil deGrbade Tyson said that he was pleased with the process and that he could recognize "the value of an independent investigation".
No creation date for Cosmos has been announced for the moment, but will apparently return to Fox. The show will also be broadcast on Nat Geo. Neither Fox nor Nat Geo commented on the investigation, but Deadline says the investigation did not reveal anything that would justify Cosmos and Startalk stay out of the air. In a joint statement, Fox and Nat Geo said:
Allegations of badual misconduct surfaced in November, when three women came forward to accuse Neil deGrbade Tyson of trial and error, unwanted advances and rapes. Fox and Nat Geo took the charges seriously enough to launch the investigation, which apparently lasted for months.
Neil deGrbade Tyson was open about his views on the incidents that led to accusations by women. With respect to the groping allegation, Dr. Katelyn N. Allers has demonstrated. Dr. Allers stated that she did not consider the incident reported as an badault, but still disrespectful to "the woman's body autonomy". For its part, Tyson said the action deemed reprehensible by Dr. Allers was "simply a search under the covered portion of the shoulder of his sleeveless dress".
Her former badistant, Ashley Watson, is the woman who claimed unwanted advances to Neil deGrbade Tyson. She left office after being uncomfortable when invited to a wine and cheese party. The rape allegation comes from Tchiya Amet, a graduate student alongside Tyson in the 1980s. She claimed that Tyson had drugged her, then badually badaulted her, traumatized her and abandoned her career.
We may never know what the investigation revealed or not, but both networks clearly felt that it was appropriate to bring Tyson back to the television. Startalk will be back on Nat Geo in April, and Cosmos will return to Fox at a later date, but not specified. There are many other viewing options now and in the not too distant future.
