Michael Essien took office after joining the club of Azerbaijan
Ghana International and former Chelsea player Michael Essien took on a coaching and playing role after joining Azerbaijan's Sabail FC for a short-term contract.
The agreement, which runs until May 2020, will allow Essien to join the club's under-19 coaching staff to gain coaching experience as part of its UEFA B qualification, a continuation from his coaching job with Chelsea U16.
The 36-year-old should be in action for the club after the international break.
Michael Essien has been a member of major European clubs such as Real Madrid, Olympic Lyon, AC Milan and Panathianiakos.
He played for the last time on the Indonesian side Persip Bandung in 2018.
