Lorraine Costin, the former wife of Paul Merson, said how little she had noticed that he had noticed that he had lost £ 7 million during their marriage.
Merson, a television expert for Sky Sports, revealed that he was again struggling with an addiction to ITV's next documentary. Harry's Heroes: Full English.
Former Arsenal player, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, who won 21 caps for England, admitted: "My game is out of control."
The 50-year-old star, who has seven children and three women, explained how her addiction made him feel like an addict.
Now, Costin said that despite her naivety during their marriage, she was largely unaware of the extent of her gambling problem.
"We have never had any money worries because he has paid off his debts," she says.
"But if you earn £ 10,000 a week and you're addicted to the game, you're going to spend £ 10,000.
"I was not even angry when I found out how much he had spent. I just felt helpless. "
Merson received a lot of support after the online broadcast of a clip of his vehicle in a taxi.
And he tweeted his thanks this week stating, "Thanks for the support tweets, it means the world to me, take one day at a time but it improves for me.
"Drug addiction is the most isolated place and I have had three of the worst types in three decades.
"Never be afraid to speak, you are never alone."
Lorraine now lives in St Albans and helps women cope with breakdowns and addiction issues.
And she admits that even if the two are no longer close to each other, she would like to sit down with her former husband and offer her support.
"It's so sad when I see him like that and I think he's 50 years old and still has no control over his life," she told The Sun.
"I do not know where Sers is in his life, but I think he needs to tackle something deeper.
"I would like to sit down with him and have a coffee and chat, because I would like to help him."
Harry's Heroes: The Full English airs on Mondays and Tuesdays on ITV at 21h.
