Mark Karpeles is responsible for the non-protection of funds, says Roger Ver of Bitcoin Cash

Roger Ver, CEO of Bitcoin.com and well-known Bitcoin Cash advocate, recently spoke about Mark Karpeles. Karpeles, the former CEO of Mt. Gox – the famous Bitcoin exchange, made the headlines this week after being sentenced to a suspended sentence by the Tokyo District Court.

Karpeles was found guilty of changing numbers in the company's financial records and was acquitted of all other charges, including embezzlement. The verdict relieved the CEO, who would have been sentenced to ten years in prison if the charges of embezzlement had been proven. He was accused of having embezzled about 3 million dollars of client funds.

The Tokyo District Court said that "he had acted without any bad intention," reported Bloomberg. In addition, he was sentenced to a suspended two-and-a-half-year sentence, to which he will have to serve his sentence if he commits another crime in the next four years.

The court also said:

"The charge of falsifying electronic records is true and deserves punishment, but there is no criminal evidence of embezzlement. […] There is no excuse for the defendant, who is an engineer with deep knowledge, to abuse his status and authority to perform intelligent criminal acts. "

Roger Ver, in an interview with Decrypt, said Karpeles was "responsible for not doing a good job protecting the funds from hackers." Nevertheless, Bitcoin Cash's promoter also made it clear that he had held hackers accountable for stealing funds.

Gox was once the world's largest bitcoin exchange platform, controlling more than 70 percent of all BTC transactions. However, the exchange was a victim of hacking and subsequently lost control of more than 7% of all outstanding Bitcoins. The platform then ceased operations and declared bankruptcy.

Currently, Mt. Gox is currently undergoing a civil rehabilitation program in which victims of the platform will be reimbursed for their losses with Bitcoins discovered by Karpeles in cold portfolios. Ver is said to be one of those victims, holding "life-changing amounts of Bitcoins" on the trade, reported Decrypt.

In addition, with respect to Karpeles' suspended prison sentence, Ver stated that it was only for "those who are physically dangerous to others". He also suggested that people be punished after their conviction, not before, considering the interrogation of Karpeles 50 days in a row.
