Albert Adomah left the bench of scorers to allow Aston Villa to win 3-0 in Middlesbrough to qualify for the playoffs.
John McGinn was leading the series while he was staring at Anwar El Ghazi's first goal in the 28th minute.
Villa followed the match after the superb 44th-minute strike from McGinn.
A late goal from substitute Albert Adomah completed the defeat to give Villa a fourth consecutive win that sent another message to the rest of the championship.
