The Bangladeshi cricket team left New Zealand on Saturday a few hours after narrowly escaping death in the deadliest terrorist attack in the country's history.
Leaving behind the frightening experience of Friday in Christchurch, Bangladesh cricket players were relieved to take the plane back home.
The Bangladeshi team, which was scheduled last Saturday for the third and final test against New Zealand, went to the Masjid Al Noor mosque, one of two sites of the shooting that killed at least 49 people. The tour was canceled immediately.
Players and Bangladesh leadership left Christchurch on Saturday, traveling from their downtown hotel to Christchurch Airport on the police escorted police team bus, according to stuff.co.nz.
Bangladesh support staff had to take another flight.
On Friday, the bus was carrying 17 members of the team: Liton Das, Nayeem Hasam and the bowling coach as well as the former player of India, Sunil Joshi, returned to the 39; hotel.
Players and support staff heard gunshots as they feared for their lives inside the bus. A few minutes later, they had the courage to disembark and rush to the Hagley Oval Stadium.
Their bus was only 50 meters from the mosque and the players were worried about how they would get out of the vehicle safely. Once at the Hagley Oval hotel, they were housed in a walk-in dressing room before leaving for the team hotel.
