One person was shot dead after gunmen opened fire on the Anuful community in Naweik, Chereponi District, Northeast Region, on Friday night.

The victim is treated at Chereponi District Hospital.

Since then, 75 soldiers and 40 policemen have been deployed in the area after retaliatory attacks on Saturday morning, according to Chereponi District Chief Tahidu Abdul Razak.

Mr. Abdul Razak said he heard about the shooting for the first time at 11 pm on Friday.

The violence has spread to other communities beyond Naweik, including Nasoni, where some houses have been burned.

"There was another attack on one of the communities, so the police and the army are on site this morning and they are still there," said the DCE.

In January, the Ministry of Defense had to deploy troops to contain tensions similar to Chereponi.

It was after two people were reportedly killed and several others injured as a result of a clash between Anufuls and Konkombas over a plot of land in Naduni, a district farming community.

This clash was provoked by suspicions that Chekosi allegedly attacked Konkombas with stones.
