The search for Infinity Stones is probably what comes closest to the major plot of the Marvel film universe. The physical representations of the fundamental elements of existence created during the Big Bang, each stone has incredible power. Although the six stones do not appear in all the films, they have appeared at the center of multiple franchise entries and are at the heart of Avengers: war in the infinite and the next Avengers: End of the game.
But where were they before Thanos managed to get them back? Think about the history of the Infinity Stones, while CBR indicates where they are in the history of the MCU – or at least what we know so far.
Stone of space
The stone of space was not initially identified as such. Instead, it was introduced as the Tesseract, discovered for the first time during World War II, hidden behind a mural depicting the tree of the Asgardian world (which suggests that the Asgardians played a role in its concealment on Earth). Red Skull flew and confided to Armin Zola, a scientist at Hydra, but Hydra lost the space stone while Red Skull was apparently disintegrated and Captain America had crashed the plane that the was transporting in the ocean. The project, led by Dr. Wendy Lawson (secretly Mar-Vell of Kree), studied the space stone, using it to develop travel engines in space.
After the death of Lawson, Carol Danvers destroyed the engine powered by these energies, which earned him to receive his powers. The stone was rediscovered by Captain Marvel and protected from the Kree before returning with S.H.I.E.L.D. The Pegasus project resumed its experiments until Loki stole the space stone The Avengers and used to open a portal for the Chituari invasion. Taken by the Asgardians in the aftermath of the battle, the stone of space remained in Asgard until its destruction in Thor: Ragnarok. Thanos took the Loki stone in War of Infinity.
Reality stone
Like the power stone, the reality stone (or the ether, as Asgardians know and their enemies the Dark Eleven) was used for great destruction before being concealed. Thousands of years ago, the Dark Eleves tried to use the stone to destroy existence, but were defeated by the Asgardians. Sealed by Bor, Odin's father, after forcing the Dark Elves to retreat, the Ether remained hidden for centuries.
But when convergence opened the walls between the worlds during Thor: The World of DarknessJane Foster accidentally interacted with Aether and bonded with him. This threatened Jane's life and made her a target of the Dark Elves, who eventually pulled her out of power and merged with their leader, Malekith.
But before Malekith could use the reality stone to destroy the universe, Thor and his allies were able to stop him and separate him from it. Fearing to keep him too close to the Tesseract (thinking that having two Infinity Stones in the same place was a problem), the Asgardians gave Aether to the Collector. He stayed there until Thanos attacked Knowhere and took it from him.

Power stone
The power stone was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy. As the collector revealed, the stone previously belonged to the Celestials, who used it to eliminate entire planets. Others have tried to exploit the Power Stone but have not managed to contain the energies. Eventually, the stone was eventually hidden on the dead planet known as Morag, in an indescribable orb in a hidden grave. Thanos recruited Ronan to recover the stone, but his men were unable to claim the stone before Star-Lord and the Ravagers were hired to steal it. Star-Lord went with the stone, triggering the events of Guardians of the Galaxy.

The group tried to sell the orb to the collector, but when one of his servants tried to use it to fight back against his master, it was destroyed by overwhelming power. Ronan took it and tried to use the stone to destroy Xandar's native world of the Nova Corps, but the Guardians were able to unite and control the Power Stone, killing Ronan and saving the day. The Guardians entrusted the stone to the Nova Corps … which was quickly swept away by Thanos when he attacked Xandar for the stone of the infinite.
