Accra, March 15, GNA –
Mr. John Peter Amewu, Minister of Energy, badured Ghanaians that the recent
Power outages across the country are by no means the return of
"Dumsor".

According to him
the government is working diligently to remedy the situation and is also ensuring that
Ghana's electricity system works effectively.

"Let me say that the
events that led to challenges that Ghana's food system has experienced are by
no means the return of "dumsor". We work diligently to respond to
situation".

Mr. Amewu gave the
badurance when he informed Parliament about the recent electrical disturbances
on the Ghanaian power grid on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 March.
2019.

The minority in
Parliament attributed power cuts across the country to
liquidity problems in the electricity sector and asked the government to be frank with
Ghanaians and publish a load shed schedule to help consumers plan their
Activities.

According to
Minority recent power outages reflect financial problems
energy sector because of the government's inability to pay off its debt.

They claim that there is a
huge deficit of 1,000 megawatts because the energy sector is financially
bankrupt and that the country can not pay for the energy it consumes.

Mr. Amewu too
explained that the electrical system was experiencing a number of disturbances that
interruption of the customer's power supply.

He said the main cause
of the blackout was the ongoing construction of the exchange in Pokuase
which necessitated the diversion of GRIDCO's 330kv transmission lines that works
from Tema to Aboadze.

This requires taking
a complete stop of the line to the central station of the business district.

Mr. Amewu too
clarified that as a result of the failure of the 330kv line, no power supply was available.
transmitted from Aboadze to Accra.

He said, instead,
the power must be transmitted from Akosombo to Mallam, Winneba and Cape
Coast to the west of the country by 161kv transmission line.

This 161kv line has become
overloaded, causing triggering as a protective measure to avoid any
significant damage to the equipment.

He said the
Transmission lines across the country are interconnected to the extent that
disturbance in a transmission line has a tearing effect on others.

He said power
the plants are designed to shut off automatically in response to hiccups in the
power transmission course.

Mr. Amewu further
explained that it became necessary to temporarily shred and limit the flow of energy
in the coastal corridor to facilitate the stability of the entire transport network
network while work on the hijacking of the Pokuase line is complete.

"This question is therefore a
purely operational and technical challenge at the stage of transmission, he
nothing to do with technical defects at the stage of generation or distribution of
the value chain of power, "he added.
