Atletico Madrid set a new participation world record for a women's match between two clubs: 60,739 people clashed in Sunday's league match against Barcelona.

Atletico usually plays his home games on the club's training ground, but the demand for tickets has forced him to move the match to the Wanda Metropolitano, with a capacity of 68,000 seats, located on the outskirts from Madrid.

Atletico was beaten 2-0 by the crowd, while goals from Asisat Oshoala and Toni Duggan reopened the title race. This result means that Barca, who is in second place, brings the Atletico leader by three points to six matches from the end.

Record attendance in Madrid continues to increase the popularity of women's football in Spain.

Athletic Bilbao has only set a new participation record for a women's match in the country last month when 48,121 fans attended their Copa de la Reina match against Atletico in San Mames.

Tickets for the Atletico vs Barca match were available for free for club members and from € 5 for the general public.

A spokesman for Atletico told ESPN FC that more than 40% of Sunday tickets had been paid.

The final was still far from the world record for an international women's match, with 90,185 people in attendance for the 1999 World Cup final between the United States and China at Pasadena's Rose Bowl.
