The Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Emmanuel Kofi Nti, said nearly 2 million people have registered to obtain the Taxpayer Identification Number (PIN).

According to him, in December 2018, the number of people with a TIN was slightly less than two million.

He said the TIN's introduction strategy had improved tax collection across the country.

Mr. Kofi Nti said that "the TIN helped, in December 2017, the number of people on the TIN was 1,017,384. By the end of December (2018), we were just under 400 people out of two million and the performance of the small offices of taxpayers are revealing the role of TIN registration if the application is carried out. "

He was speaking recently in an interview with the media.

According to him, "in this area, the collection from the self-employed has been improved in the small offices of taxpayers of the country."

The TIN is a unique 11-digit number required under the Revenue Administration Act (RAA) 2016 (Bill 915) and allows taxpayers to easily process cases. This is part of efforts to improve tax compliance and broaden the tax net.

In accordance with the RAA, the GRA is responsible for setting up a taxpayer identification numbering system in order to identify taxpayers and promote compliance with tax obligations.

The implementation of the RAA came into effect on Monday, April 1, 2018.

The list of RAI institutions that apply the TIN includes: the Registrar General's Department, the Land Commission, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Pbadport Office, the DVLA, the Courts, the Comptroller's Department and General Accountant and the GRA.

The others are ministries, departments and agencies (MDA), metropolitan, municipal and district bademblies (MMDA), banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions, manufacturing companies and other public institutions providing essential and social services.
