Dominic Thiem put an end to Roger Federer's bid for a sixth record title at Indian Wells with a three-set victory in the California final.
The seventh-seeded Austrian fought to beat Federer 3-6 6-3 7-5.
Swiss Federer, 24-time Grand Slam champion, only converted two of the 11 break points and made 32 unforced errors against Thiem's 25.
Thiem collapsed on the back, delighted with obtaining his first title at a Masters 1000 event.
Thiem will rise to fourth place in the world rankings Monday after winning his first competition since September 2018.
Federer, who had lost to Juan Martin del Potro at Indian Wells in the final last year, made an optimistic start.
He created early break opportunities in Thiem's first service game and converted his fourth point of the opening game stop for a 2-0 lead.
Thiem, who was competing in his third Masters 1000 final, forced the mistake of Federer 's setback to return to service, but the Swiss kept him under pressure.
A good return of service allowed Federer to score for a 5-3 lead and closed the match in 36 minutes.
Federer seemed comfortable and quickly created two more break chances in the second set, but the 37-year-old man both wasted them.
A bad game of service, with Federer heading for the net, allowed Thiem to free himself and the Austrian kept his cool to force a third set.
Thiem saved a decisive point in an eight-minute match to hold 4-4 and overcame a bad fall to beat Federer three games later and serve for the title.
The Austrian won 70% of first serve points and ensured victory thanks to Federer's return in goal.
Federer, who won his 100th ATP title in Dubai the week before Indian Wells, will be ranked fifth.
