NEW DELHI, March 18 (Xinhua) – A seven-year-old boy who tested positive for West Nile virus in the state of Kerala, southern India, died Monday, announced health officials.
The boy died at the Kozhikode Medical School Hospital, about 375 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala.
"Early today, at 3:00 am (local time), an HIV-positive boy for West Nile virus died at the hospital, died," said a health official of the ### 39, Kozhikode University Hospital. "That was the only case there is absolutely no reason to panic because the boy was in solitary confinement."
West Nile virus is spread from birds to humans through the bite of an infected Culex mosquito. Mosquitoes contract the virus from infected birds.
Symptoms include colds, fever, body aches, fatigue and nausea, as well as complications that can lead to meningitis and death.
Southern state authorities have already issued a high alert.
Doctors said that it was less likely that the virus would be transmitted from person to person.
Last week, the Indian Ministry of Health dispatched a team of experts from the National Center for Disease Control to help state health authorities manage the disease.
