Congolese president suspends installation of senators after acts of violence

KINSHASA, Congo – The Congolese Interior Minister said the president had suspended the installation of newly elected senators after protests over the weekend had led to violence resulting in at least one death.

Interior Minister Basile Olongo said Monday that President Felix Tshisekedi had also postponed the governors' elections to 27 March. He made that decision after meeting with the head of the National Assembly, the outgoing Senate president, the prime minister and the foreign and interior ministers.

Tshisekedi said the suspension was intended to give prosecutors time to investigate allegations that local MPs were corrupted by candidates for Senate seats.

Members of Tshisekedi's Union for Democracy and Social Progress party demonstrated Saturday after the party won no seat in the Kinshasa Senate at the regional badembly. While the electors elect the regional deputies, the senators are then chosen by the deputies.
