Fredrick Amanor was arrested and tried for badaulting a client of Midlands Savings and Loans
The police department will not pursue any criminal action against Lance Corporal Fredrick Amanor, the police officer who badaulted a lady from a branch of Midland Savings and Loans in Accra.
He later returned to the post office.
ACP David Eklu, Ghana's police chief of public affairs, confirmed this statement in an interview on Monday at the Citi Breakfast Show.
ACP Eklu said: "internal disciplinary proceedings" are still ongoing after the July 2018 attack, but added that anyone aggrieved by the handling of the case by the police can go to court.
"If someone is still not satisfied, he can go to court and review it again, but we have done what we are supposed to do, according to the law."
Fredrick Amanor was arrested and tried for badaulting a client of the Midlands Savings and Loans Company in 2018.
However, the widely-condemned act of police brutality resulted in no conviction, as the case was dismissed due to an alleged lack of interest in the victim's trial , Patience Osafo.
He is back to his post, according to ACP Eklu, who added that there was no reason to alarm.
"There are some tasks the officer will not do," he told Bernard Avle at the Citi Breakfast Show.
"The police officer [Fredrick Amanor] work now. It is subject to internal disciplinary processes. This is advice, supervision and all I'm saying is that we do not approve of this kind of action but we would all have hoped that the law would have been applied, but it ended at a given moment. "
In response to concerns about the treatment of Fredrick Amanor's case, ACP Eklu said: "It tells me that there is a need to increase public engagement on some of these issues."
"We did it even to the extent that people said we were still too harsh against the policeman because he was immediately arrested, placed in police custody, arrested, etc."
Controversy over the lawsuit
Patience Osafo's lawyer challenged claims that his client was not interested in pursuing the case.
This was contrary to a court decision dismissing the case, citing the victim's lack of interest in failing to appear in court several times to testify.
His lawyer, Samson Lardy Anyenini, rejected the claims.
"There were appropriate charges against these gentlemen, but that was not done. We know he had to be charged with more than just badault, but since it was the police who were defending their colleague, they obviously looked away and did not consider the offense of causing potential harm. ten years in prison. They could have added the charge of exposing the child to danger, as shown in the video. They did not do all this, "he added.
Lance Corporal Amanor attacked Patience Osafo in July 2018 while she was attempting to withdraw her savings of 270.00 GHc after office hours because of the bank's frustrations.
The police officer had physical problems after Patience Osafo refused to leave the wicket with his grandson because his money was not given to him.
We saw the policeman hook on the woman and hit her repeatedly with an umbrella, while she was trying to push her out of the hall of the wickets.
He also tried to pull her violently out of the building while she was holding the baby in her arms.
The incident was filmed and recorded on social media, causing public outrage and condemnations of Amnesty International, the Ghana Bar Association, the Ministry of the State of women, children and social welfare and a number of civil society organizations.
