There seems to be no month in which we can not be quiet about the applications we download, because there are always cases in which we have to ask ourselves if we hacked the phone or no. As this week, for example, more than 200 applications infected with malicious code called "Sinbad" have been detected and available in the official Google Play store. The main feature of malware is to display advertisements. Although apps have already been removed from Google Play, users who install one must manually delete them.
200 Android apps with malware
As we read in the OSI, Internet Security Office, the applications were discovered by researchers from the security company Check Point, and it is estimated that Downloads from all applications reached a total of 150 million users. The malware has been dubbed "SimBad" because the applications concerned are mainly simulation games. Once installed, applications are programmed to run automatically when the device is turned on or the phone is unlocked. When they are broadcast, they show ads on the devices concerned.
In addition, the malicious code has additional features such as
- Remove icons from infected apps to make it more difficult to uninstall
- Show notifications
- Open web addresses
- Promote other applications
Since Google has already taken the necessary steps to remove the affected applications from Google Play, there is no risk of infection of new users. However, users who have already installed one of the applications must manually uninstall them from their device.
One of the functions of the malicious code is to remove the inconvenience of the launcher applications, so that it is more difficult to eliminate, it is advisable to access Settings> Applications and review the complete list of applications installed on the device to exclude any affected applications from being installed.
