Manchester United or Arsenal could drop central defender Kostas Manolas at Roma this summer.

According to reports in Italy, the Greek defender will be allowed to leave Rome this summer if he fails to secure a place in the Champions League.

Calciomercato says that Manolas has a release clause in his contract that allows him to leave for 31 million pounds if Roma does not finish in the top four Italian.

They currently sit fifth in the A series, four points behind the fourth, having sacked their coach Eusebio di Francesco.

On Monday, Roma boss Claudio Ranieri admitted that if the Giallorossi did not guarantee football in the Champions League, changes would be inevitable this summer at Stadio Olimpico.

Manolas in action

Manolas has been regularly badociated with the Red Devils and Gunners in recent years.

The fee for the 27-year-old is in excess of £ 45 million – a figure that has not yet seen anyone take the plunge.

But the Roma were forced to sell key trio Alisson, Radja Nainggolan and Kevin Strootman last summer as they tried to balance their accounts – though they are back in the Champions League.

Twelve months ago, it was Mohamed Salah.

Alisson left for Liverpool last summer

To finish fifth or less this season will leave them with no choice but to resell important men again this summer.

United and Arsenal want to strengthen their defense.

Indeed, Unai Emery was on a scouting mission this weekend while he was preparing for the summer transfer window, watching Getafe defender, Djene Dakonam; likewise, he would ask for a fee of the order of 30 million pounds sterling.

United has also been looking for defensive reinforcements lately. Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli is supposed to be their number one target.

But Mirror Football understands that United could delay the move of a defender this summer, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to give the best of his time to Jadon Sancho.
