What will the processor of your next MacBook look like? Well, it's almost certainly an Intel Bridge Sandy Bridge microprocessor, and if you want to see the future, you should look into the bowels of the latest Windows laptops.
On Laptoping, they managed to spot some of the new generation laptops offered by Acer, Gateway and Lenovo, featuring a new 2.0-GHz quad-core processor called Intel i7-2630QM, Processor-based 32-nanometer process.
Also noteworthy in the new Sandy Bridge chips: an integrated graphics core that is even more impressive than previous Intel offerings. This graphics core is not up to the entry-level GPUs of NVIDIA and AMD, but it is nevertheless a significant improvement over Intel's previous offerings. My badumption is that Apple will continue to adopt a discrete GPU in their future MacBook Pro, but could this integrated kernel lead to future entry-level MacBooks? My badumption – given the NVIDIA GeForce 320M card from MacBook Air – is not, but it is possible, if the performance sacrificed is not too big.
Of course, none of the laptops identified by Laptoping are available yet, and will not be available until January 2011. Do not be surprised, though, if these processors end up in your next MacBook Pro.
