Liverpool striker Xherdan Shaqiri was forced to withdraw from European qualifying for the first time in Switzerland because of an injury.

Switzerland begins its qualifying campaign for the 2020 Europe Championship in Georgia on Saturday and then hosts Denmark three days later.

But Shaqiri, a key player of the manager, Vladimir Petkovic, will not participate in these meetings after his withdrawal from the group.

The Swiss Football Federation confirmed that tests conducted on Monday revealed that Shaqiri had inflammation in his groin.

He left the team's training camp and is expected to return to Liverpool to begin his rehabilitation.

The injury will no doubt be a concern for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who is preparing his team for a crucial run.

The Anfield club is competing for national and European glory and the German coach will want to choose a full team.

Shaqiri has been forced to settle for a supportive role since his signing in Liverpool

Shaqiri was an unused substitute in Liverpool's nervous 2-1 victory at Fulham on Sunday, a result that brought them back to Manchester City, who played one game less.

The league leaders for Klopp are also in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, where they will face a double confrontation with the Portuguese giant Porto.

Shaqiri has scored six goals and three badists in 26 games for Liverpool this term, but has not played since the 0-0 draw against Manchester United at the end of February.
