Emmanuel Mensah, a student at 15-year-old Dormaa Akwamu Methodist Primary School, was found in an abandoned Galamsey pit in Dormaa Akwamu, Dormaa East District, Bono Region.

The body, found at an advanced stage of decomposition, was quickly buried on the advice of medical authorities to prevent the occurrence of a disease, police said.

According to school authorities, Emmanuel was last seen at school on March 12, 2019 and they heard of the incident only afterwards.

His body was found afloat in an abandoned pit of Galamsey containing water. It was also not known whether his clothes, which had been found about 15 meters from the pit, were his school uniform or not.

Akua Serwaa, the boy's grandmother, with whom he lived, told police that Emmanuel left home on March 12 and went to school. After that, he went to visit his mother, Afua Vivian, in the same town, but could not come back. Police say investigations are underway to determine the cause of death.
