The fight against illegal mining is a war that is not over
The Western Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service has arrested about 68 illegal miners in the area.
59 of them were foreign nationals, the rest being local accomplices.
Illegal miners were arrested at dawn Tuesday by immigration service personnel during a joint operation with the Mpohor District Security Council.
The 68 galamsey operators were arrested at various locations and gathered in Adumbanso, Mpohor District.
Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Beatrice Okpoti confirmed this information, stating that the 59 foreigners were from Burkina Faso, Benin and Niger.
She added that the 68 illegal miners were between 20 and 39 years old, adding that they were currently under the custody of the Ghana Immigration Service.
Galamsey fight not won yet
In 2018, the government lifted the ban it imposed on small-scale mining operations, also known as galamsey in the country.
Galamsey Media Coalition official Ken Ashigbey last December said the fight against illegal mining has not been won yet.
Speaking at The Citi TV's News Point's program of the news program, Mr. Ashigbey said that despite the measures taken to attack it in a way that permanent in Galamsey, Chinese nationals in the activity.
He said the Forestry Commission had also failed with regard to Galamsey, since most illegal mining activities are conducted freely around forest reserves.
