The CEO and co-founder of Kickstarter, Perry Chen, has resigned from his position as General Manager of the company. Chen wrote in a blog today that he would remain chairman of Kickstarter's board of directors and that he intended to focus on "high-needs businesses" level and in the long term ".
Chen has been part of Kickstarter since its inception and was CEO during his first five years. He resigned for the first time in 2014, leaving the role to Yancey Strickler, co-founder, and returned in 2017 after Strickler decided to leave the company. At the time, Kickstarter had planned to look outside candidates, according to Buzzfeed Newsbut Chen intervened discreetly and took over the role.
The latter resignation comes the same day Kickstarter staff announced plans to join Local 153 of the International Union of Office and Professional Employees (OPEIU). Kickstarter staff said they were forming a union to promote winning "a place at the table."
Chen has chosen a successor as interim CEO: Aziz Hasan, who currently heads Kickstarter's design and product teams. Chen, however, wrote that the board of directors "will work with Aziz over the coming weeks and months to make this role permanent". Hasan joined the company last year, having previously worked at Refinery29.
