The suspect pleaded guilty to the offense
A 27-year-old graphic designer who attacked a 102-year-old woman for the purpose of robbing her is sentenced to five years in prison by an Accra circuit court.
Joel Mawuli Mensa, accused of causing harm, pleaded guilty.
Mensa told the court that he thought the old woman had money tied around her belt.
The convicted, however, denied another charge of attempted crime.
The court chaired by Mr. Aboagye Tandoh sentenced him for murder. The court, however, ordered him to reappear on April 1 to answer the charge of attempted crime.
Chief Inspector Willian K. Boateng stated that the complainant, Ms. Leticia Osabukle, resided in Teshie, while Mensah also lived in the same area and was currently unemployed.
The Prosecution stated on 7 March this year that Chief Inspector Boateng, at around 19:00, Ms. Osabukle had gone to the toilet, located in the same courtyard but a few meters from her room.
The prosecution said that suddenly Mensa jumped on the complainant and tried to take money from her waist.
The complainant shouted for help but Mensa covered her mouth.

The prosecution stated that a witness in the case who had heard the plaintiff shout had rushed to the scene and rescued her. However, Mensa escaped climbing the wall but left his sandals.
He stated that a report had been submitted to the Nungua police, where a medical report form had been provided to the complainant so that he would seek medical badistance.
The prosecution stated that the applicant was then admitted to military hospital 37 and released.
