A newborn baby makes a hellish start in life after his parents called him LUCIFER

A FAMILY was so happy to welcome a new little devil in her life that she named him Lucifer.

But the infernal name could be thwarted by another born last year – Messiah.

The baby's family was able to call him Lucifer because the advice where his birth was recorded did not consider the name offensive.

Other unusual nicknames chosen by new parents for their offspring in 2018 include Awesome, Nun, Royalty and Corbyn-Bleu.

Olivia was the most popular name for girls born in Scotland, but Luna-Marvella, Favor, Pepper and Alba-Crystal were also selected.

Jack was the best name for the boys for Grade 11, but Harlem-Ace, Echo, Winter and Merlin were other newcomers.

Karen Watson of the Edinburgh Council said: "There are not really rules about names.

"It's a case where people can call their baby the way they want.

"Some people make a name for themselves, some after the last actors, some who have been to Love Island or even football teams or players.

"To be perfectly honest, the names are now rather normal and there are only one or two that change a little.

"As long as it's not offensive, we do not participate in what they call their baby.

"All kinds of legislation comes from NRS.

"If it were really shocking, we would contact NRS but, to be perfectly honest, it does not happen.

"I do not remember that time and I've been doing the job for 39 years."
