The Ghana Council for Foreign Affairs (CFR-Gh) will hold a public lecture in Accra on March 22, 2019 at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Center for ICT Excellence, to discuss the implications for Africa of withdrawal of Britain from the European Union (UN).
Baroness Valerie Ann Amos, diplomat and British politician, will speak on the topic "Is the retreat of multilateralism creating new opportunities for the African continent?
It should be of interest to diplomats, journalists, students and the business community who want to understand the implications of Brexit for business.
The event is open to the public and guests must sit before 16:30.
Baroness Amos is currently Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London (SOAS). From 2010 to 2015, she served as Secretary General of Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN.
In 2003, Baroness Amos became the first Black woman member of the British Cabinet, first as Secretary of State for International Development, then as House Leader of the House of Lords and Lord President of the Council. .
She was Minister of African Affairs in 2001-2003. Before joining the UN, Baroness Amos was High Commissioner in Australia.
Baroness Amos was also Chief Executive Officer of the United Kingdom's Equal Opportunities Commission and Mandela's South Africa Government Advisor on Leadership, Change, Management and Strategy from 1994 to 1998 .
The Ghanaian Government awarded her the Order of the Volta in 2008 and in June 2016 she was named Companion of Honor on the Queen's Day honors list in Great Britain.
CFR-Gh was inaugurated in February by President Akufo-Addo. It is the first Ghanaian think tank on international relations. Its president is Ambbadador D.K. Osei, retired diplomat and civil servant.
