Gareth Bale was present but safe for a game in which Wales won a late winner on Ben Woodburn, a deserved result after the steady pressure in the second half that had improved Ryan Giggs' disappointing record.
After a year of work on Friday, Giggs' 10th game was won by a fourth victory in the game with five losses and one draw. Before the Euro 2020 qualifying match against Slovakia, the manager protected all his A-Listers. That meant neither Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen, Ben Davies nor first-choice goalie Wayne Hennessey.

The visitors were 4-4-1-1 and the captain, Khaleem Hyland, offered a first threat by remotely targeting Ward's goal. When Chris Gunter pbaded on the right side, Phillip caught Hedges' shot, which foreshadowed a pressure pbad from Wales to the other side. Left-back Neil Taylor fooled into two centers and Will Vaulks's ball was weakly led by Woodburn.
Then a shine of quality when Trinidad No. 9, Will Plaza, found Hyland and he recycled the ball to Nathan Lewis at full speed. Wales was grateful that nothing came. It was the same for visitors when George Thomas was widely spread as the interval approached. Just before the whistle, Woodburn was facing a painful challenge from Kevan George but was able to return to work.
For the second half, Giggs recruited Ward for Adam Davies, Barnsley's goalkeeper making his international debut. Lawrence's switchman was to replace Plaza with Cordell Cato of Oklahoma City.
Giggs has named Ashley Williams captain, despite Everton central defender's tough fight to play Stoke City regularly, and the manager will not have been pleased to see him hand over the ball carelessly.
Yet, given the unobtrusive nature of usability, this could perhaps be excused. After an enthusiastic rendition before the Land of My Fathers meeting of 12,000 spectators, the crowd also calmed down.
But when Woodburn slipped into Thomas's violent shot the No. 11 warmed Phillip's fingers – and the crowd – as he saved to his right. Suddenly, the game caught fire. Levi Garcia bypbaded Davies on the other end and found Aubrey David. His effort was erased from the line of Wales by Gunter.
From there, Wales lobbied and finally got the breakthrough, Woodburn's chest coming back from the ball in the bottom of the goals. His goal gave Wales the perfect boost before the serious things, the start of the weekend of their qualifying campaign for the European Championship.
