After fear of the Nipah virus from Kerala in 2018, Karnataka takes no chances after the death of a six-year-old West Nile fever patient in Malappuram district, in the neighboring state. The health department of Karnataka has alerted districts that share borders with Kerala.
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. Mosquitoes are infected by infected birds. The department issued a circular for district health officials.
Dr. S. Sajjan Shetty, co-director of the National Vector-borne Disease Control Program, Department of Health and Family Welfare, said DH"On Wednesday we alerted the border districts of Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada. I asked them to strengthen surveillance for acute encephalitis syndrome (AEs). "
"There is no need to panic because the risks of transmitting the virus under extreme conditions are low. A campaign against mosquitoes and migratory birds, the main carriers of the virus, will be conducted, "he said.
In January 2018, a suspected case of West Nile fever was reported in Dakshina Kannada District. Later, the patient recovered and was released.
