Three people died and about 1,800 people were displaced in a renewed conflict between the Konkombas and Chokosis in the Chereponi district of the Northeast region.

Police found six single-barreled firearms and a locally made weapon.

Up to now, eight people have been arrested in connection with the latest violence.

Some of the displaced people, including women and children who have fled the affected communities, would endure relatives and friends in Chereponi, the district capital, while homeless people would sleep under the stars.

The Deputy Coordinator of the National Organization for Disaster Management (NADMO) in Chereponi District, Mr. Sulemana Amadu, who reported this during a telephone interview with the Daily Graphic yesterday, said that his team had not been able to move to the affected communities for evaluation. because of the tense situation there.

He said, however, that the organization had started registering some of the displaced people returning from neighboring Togo to Chereponi.

Briefing

The Public Relations Officer (PR) of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DSP), Mohammed Yusif Tanko, who briefed the media, said more police and military personnel had been deployed in the area to control the situation.

The conflict that erupted last Friday has reportedly spread to other communities in Konkomba and Chokosi in Bunkpurugu and Yunyoo districts that share borders with Chereponi district, all in the northeastern region.

Mr Tanko called on the leaders of both ethnic groups to make their people understand to avoid violence, as it does not promote development.
