Tottenham is preparing to move into his new stadium – but history shows that it may take a while for them to find their bearings on his new pitch.

The Spurs confirmed that they would play their first game at the new stadium against the Crystal Palace on April 3, after seven months behind schedule in construction.

Seven teams made permanent or temporary moves during the modern era. Fulham, like Spurs, made two moves after playing temporarily at Loftus Road, while Craven Cottage was developed between 2002 and 2004.

So how did these teams manage?

The graph below shows that only two teams really improved their home results in their new stadium: Derby in 1997/98 and Fulham in 2002/03 – but six of the previous eight have actually declined at home.

In fact, the Spurs recorded the largest decline ever after the move at Wembley – registering 10 points less at the national stadium than in the previous season at White Hart Lane.

West Ham and Southampton suffered the biggest fall with a nine-point drop, after the Hammers were transferred from Upton Park to the London Stadium for the start of the 2016/17 fiscal year and the Saints traded the Dell against St Mary in 2001/02.

Do the teams grow up in their new country during a first season?

The graph below shows the average points scored by the eight teams in a season and shows a gradual improvement in home results, with a seasonal fall in the second home game in a new stadium, culminating in the 19th.

The Spurs will face Liverpool on March 31, before attempting to turn the tide two days later, after beating their new court against Palace. Manchester City will travel to the Champions League a week later.
