CAN 2019 qualifying ends this weekend
The remaining teams that will make up the 24-team squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations will be nominated in the last qualifying round that will take place from March 22nd to 24th.
Fourteen teams have already sealed their places, including Egypt, for the tournament which will run from June 21 to July 19.
That leaves another 10 places in play in what could be an intense final round.
SuperSport.com evaluates the permutations in each of the qualifying pools.
GROUP A
– Senegal and Madagascar have already sealed their qualifications before their meeting in the Dakar final on March 23rd.
– Madagascar can finish first in the group with a victory or a draw with six goals or more.
– It is a first qualification for Madagascar for the continental finals.
– Sudan and Equatorial Guinea are the other teams in the pool and meet in their last match at Omdurman.
GROUP B
– Morocco has already qualified while he was heading to eliminated Malawi in his last match, needing a draw to qualify.
– Cameroon only needs a draw at home against the Comoros to seal their pbad, but a surprise defeat would see them eliminated at the league.
GROUP C
– Mali have already sealed their qualifications and face South Sudan at home, but the group of minnows has not yet scored a point in qualifying.
– Burundi, host country of Gabon, needs only a draw to seal its pbadage, but a victory for Gabon would make them move forward. The teams drew 1-1 in Libreville earlier in the competition.
GROUP D
– Algeria has already sealed its qualification but it's all to play among the other three teams. And it's quite complicated.
– The Gambia makes the trip to North Africa, knowing that a win could advance them, but might not be enough, while one point is not enough.
– If Gambia wins and Togo beats Benin in Cotonou in the other match, it will beat the match.
– If Gambia wins and Togo and Benin tie, Gambia will be ahead of Benin head-to-head.
– If Benin wins, they will join Algeria in the final, whatever happens.
– If Benin and Togo draw and Gambia fails to defeat Algeria, Benin will advance.
GROUP E
– Nigeria has already qualified for hosting the Seychelles Minnows on Friday.
– South Africa must avoid defeat against Libya in neutral Sfax, Tunisia, in order to qualify for the final.
GROUP F
– Kenya and Ghana have already qualified for the finals with a pool reduced to three teams after FIFA's suspension of Sierra Leone.
– The two teams will meet for first place in the pool in Accra, Kenya only needing a draw to maintain themselves.
GROUP G
– The four teams can still qualify from the pool in a win-win-all scenario.
– Zimbabwe only needs one point home against Congo on Sunday to secure its place.
– If the Congo wins, they will qualify by jumping over Zimbabwe.
– If Liberia scores a point in the DRC, it will be qualified under one of two scenarios. Either the Congo did not beat Zimbabwe or, if the Congo wins, it will constitute a mini-group of three teams (Zimbabwe, Congo, Liberia), all on eight points. It will then be played face-to-face between the three teams and Liberia and Congo will advance.
– DR Congo must beat Liberia to qualify for the final in Egypt.
GROUP H
– Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire have already qualified for the finals.
Ivory Coast hosts Rwanda on Saturday as Guinea travels to the Central African Republic.
GROUP I
– Mauritania has already signed a first historic qualification, while Botswana is the only team eliminated in the pool.
– Angola needs a win in Botswana to ensure its pbadage.
– If Angola draws, they must hope that Burkina Faso does not batra Mauritania at home. If this is the case, the two teams will remain on 10 points and the Burkinabés will advance the best record head-to-head.
– Burkina Faso must win to have a chance to progress.
GROUP J
– Tunisia and the host countries, Egypt, have already sealed their qualifications. Egypt had reserved its ticket for the tournament before they were named hosts, replacing Cameroon.
– Niger and eSwatini are the other two teams in the pool. Niger, host of Egypt, and eSwatini go to Tunisia.
GROUP K
– Zambia, winner of the 2012 Nations Cup, is the only team eliminated from this group so far.
– A win or draw for Guinea-Bissau at home against Mozambique will see them qualify for the final.
– A victory for Mozambique will ensure their pbadage, while a draw will not be enough, even if Zambia beat Namibia to maintain the same level on eight points with the Brave Warriors. Namibia has the best record against Mozambicans.
– If Mozambique and Zambia win, then Guinea-Bissau will beat Namibia for second place in the group at the top of the standings.
GROUP L
– Uganda has already sealed its pbadage to the finals, but everything is played out between Lesotho, Tanzania and the Cape Verde Islands.
– A win for Lesotho in Cape Verde will allow them to qualify for the finals even though Tanzania also beats Uganda, with Likuena having the best record face-to-face between the two.
– Essentially, Tanzania, which hosts Uganda, needs to improve the outcome obtained by Lesotho to secure a place in Egypt.
– Cape Verde must beat Lesotho and hope that Uganda gets at least one point in Tanzania to book its pbadage.
– If both games end in a draw, Uganda and Lesotho advance.
