A Colombian woman gave birth to a little girl whose belly contained the tiny body of her own twin sister, according to a report from The New York Times.
The phenomenon is called a "fetus in the fetus" and although extremely rare, it has already occurred. the Time reports that this type of birth was described in a British medical journal in 1808 and has occurred most recently in India, Indonesia and Singapore.
Dr. Miguel Parra-Saavedra, specialist in high-risk pregnancies in Baranquilla, Colombia, saw for the first time his mother, Monica Vega, five weeks before childbirth, the Time I said. Vega was referred to him because his obstetrician thought his fetus had a liver cyst.
Instead, Dr. Parra-Saavedra discovered that the "cyst" was actually a tiny baby with its own umbilical cord that was feeding on a larger infant.

Vega delivered her baby on February 22 by caesarean section and the next day the doctors performed a laparoscopic operation of the newborn, Itzamara, to remove the fetal twin.
Dr. Parra-Saavedra stated that the fetal twin was two inches long and had a partially formed head and limbs, but no brains or hearts.
According to Time, doctors believe that the fetus-on-fetus condition is formed when the twin embryos do not divide completely and the larger one then wraps around the smaller one. Since the smallest fetus feeds on the largest, it is called parasitic twin.
Parra-Saavedra said that Izamara was doing well, the Time reported. "She has a small scar on her belly, but it's a normal baby now, except that the whole world is talking about her."
