Accra, March 21, GNA –
Dr. Zenator Agyeman Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Korley Klotey,
said that Ghana needed more support from men to push women to leadership
positions.
She said that women do not
have enough male support in this direction and called for more encouragement to
enable women to participate in the decision-making process.
Dr. Zenator, who was
addressing young women in the chieftaincy, said that it was important to empower women to
participate in the decision-making process to create a balance.
"Female leadership
Dialogue "is organized by the Australian High Commission as part of the
celebration of International Women's Day, dubbed "More Power Together".
The MP called the women
to defend their personal values instead of following what others believed
even when it made them uncomfortable.
She confessed that
It was not easy for a woman to play politics and advised women politicians to
encourage their female colleagues to work hard and find a balance between
their political and family roles.
She said the
leadership position that they wanted would not be given to them on a
silver platter, so they have to make sure that they are heard despite the
all the challenges.
"Many women, due
their reputation and being afraid of abuse, do not want to enter
policy, "she said, but advised them to strive to fight on the ground and
let their performance be the criterion by which political parties would be
encouraged to have more women in their ranks.
She said women, when
given the skills required, excelled in the position they occupy
were given and urged society to help them be effective in all their
efforts.
Mr. Andrew Barnes, the
Australian Commissioner in Ghana, explained that the dialogue, inter alia
was to introduce successful leaders to women leaders to inspire and
serve as mentors, albeit briefly.
Mr. Adolf Bekoe, the
Responsible for the Coalition Against Domestic Violence, recommended that women
opportunity to work in a healthy environment without harbadment.
