Professor Mike Oquaye, Speaker of Parliament, was furious earlier today, 21st March 2019 after the low turnout of MPs at the beginning of the session in the House.
By the time Parliament started its work today, fewer than 30 out of 275 MPs were present. As expected, the unfortunate Speaker of Parliament expressed dissatisfaction with the late attitude of most MPs.
Addressing the House, Professor Mike Oquaye pointed out that delays and absenteeism do not send the public a positive sign of the seriousness of the members in the performance of their duties. He called on the members to give up the law.
"In a way, we have an appointment with the good people of Ghana, especially young people who come to listen to their parliament." "I'm going to pray that we take this obligation seriously. If we take our country seriously, we will take this obligation seriously, "said the Speaker of Parliament.
This is certainly not the first time that such a thing is happening in Parliament. The Honorable Joe Osei-Owusu, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, recently raised the issue of absenteeism and delays of some members.
Nothing seems to have changed, however, as it seems that legislators have become accustomed to arriving in Parliament late or not at all. Sanctions should be imposed on MPs if the situation does not change.
