Another case of poliovirus has made its appearance in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa, bringing to three the number of cases reported in the province in 2019, announced Thursday the National Center for Emergency Operations.
Polio was diagnosed in a one – year – old child in Khyber district. According to Babar bin Atta, the Prime Minister's advisor on polio, the child would have received polio drops regularly.
The counselor said that a case of polio had also been discovered in Karachi and that the addition of these two new cases brought to six the number of polio cases during the year. Of the six cases, three cases were detected at KP – one in Khyber, one in Bajaur and one in Hangu.
"Samples taken from the sewer pipes of different cities show that the polio virus is present," said Babar bin Atta.
According to the district health department, four cases of poliomyelitis were reported in November and December 2018, and one case of polio in January 2019.
A health department official said that one in four children who had been diagnosed with poliovirus in 2018 had died.
