The new Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra congratulated former President Jerry John Rawlings for his advocacy of the interests of the poor and disadvantaged in society.
Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie said that the former president's respect and commitment to youth was appreciated and recognized by many.
The Metropolitan Archbishop congratulated the former president when he called him to his office in Accra on Wednesday.
Reverend Kwofie, accompanied by leading members of the archdiocese clergy, said that former president Rawlings was an apostle fighting injustice and protecting the core values of society.
Acknowledging that the former president was an angry man because of wrongs caused by the company, Archbishop Kwofie said, "We have come to engage you together. We are here because of who you are in the country. We are all working to improve society and Ghana. "
During the two-hour meeting devoted to local and international politics, society and leaders, former President Rawlings urged the Catholic clergy to strive to expose the wrongs of society, as they did it before.
"You let us out too much. We are immune. The church has been monetized and by giving undue publicity to charlatans and frauds posing as religious leaders, we not only help expand their activities and influence, but we also help to keep people ignorant.
"The Catholic Church and other formal and traditional churches still maintain a high level of respect and credibility and must speak up. Our beautiful country and our people deserve better from political leaders from all political divisions, "said former president Rawlings.
A little earlier, the Catholic delegation had informed the former president that as parishioners of the diocese of Accra, they had come to check on his condition, pbad on his blessings to him and wish him good luck.
Bishop John Bonaventure Kwofie was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra by Pope Francis on January 2, 2019. He was officially elected Archbishop on March 1, 2019.
Prior to this position, he was bishop of the diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi.
The Metropolitan Archbishop was accompanied by a team of eleven people including Francis Adoboli – Vicar General, Anthony Adu-Mensah – Chancellor and Secretary of the Archbishop, Joseph Arthur – Financial Administrator, Samuel Filton-Mensah – Administrator of the cathedral, Andrew Quaye-Foli – Priest in charge of religious.
Charles Ackon, Protocol; Emmanuel Gosu, Dean of the Tema-Battor deanery; John Benyah Mensa, Dean of Madina Deanery; Thomas Betuyre, dean of the Mamprobi deanery; Peter Rocky Hesse, Dean of Kpehe Deanery; and Edmund Donkor-Baine, Dean of Kaneshie.
