Philippe Coutinho is mainly in trouble in Barcelona because of his misplaced position, according to Samuel Marsden, correspondent for ESPN in Barcelona.
The Brazilian has been strongly linked to moves to Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain in recent months.
A report released Thursday said that Barcelona is now "ready to listen to offers exceeding 80 million pounds" for 26 years with the move to PSG "the most plausible option".
The report Goal added that any transfer to the Red Devils "does not seem likely" with Coutinho is worried about his return to England after his family failed to fully settle during his stay in Liverpool.
Rumors were legion in the January transfer window Red Devils wanted to take Coutinho to Old Trafford after the Brazilian's debut at Camp Nou.
The former Liverpool playmaker was whistled by the fans for his performance in Barcelona's 3-1 win over Rayo Vallecano at the beginning of March, which ended with a 10-minute replacement.
"I'm not sure that its form is related to fees, I think it's more a question of position," Marsden told reporters. Liverpool Echo Blood Red Podcast.
"Robert Fernandez, the sports director who signed it, but has no more work, advertises on television. He talked a bit about Coutinho in recent weeks.
"He firmly believes that Coutinho would be his best position in the middle of the field." The idea was that he would come and go somehow into [Andres] The role of Iniesta, inside the left, and since the beginning of the season, that's where we saw it play.
"But Valverde quickly dropped it because he felt that Barca needed a midfielder ready to work more and defend himself. Having Coutinho, was almost having a fourth striker rather than a third midfielder.
"Coutinho was then moved to the left and [Ousmane] Dembele was abandoned and there were problems with Dembele.
"But then Coutinho is hurt, Dembele is well trained, has integrated the team and is doing well.
"So to feel that he did not have a home on the team, then to hurt himself and then lose his place in Dembele's favor, all that helped him lose confidence in him.
"He had his moments, but it's not the Coutinho we saw in Liverpool and it's hard to see how he'll get his spark back.
"Valverde gave Coutinho a lot of chances, probably more than he could have given to other players, because of the fees that Barca paid for him and, of course, the quality that he also has.
"He looked like a player playing sometimes without confidence and Valverde continued to play with him and stayed with him to try to bring back that confidence.
"But he did not quite get that confidence or spark that he had when he joined the club for the first time."
